atheroma /ath·er·o·ma/ (ath″er-o´mah) a mass or plaque of degenerated thickened arterial intima, occurring in atherosclerosis.

A deposit or degenerative accumulation of lipid-containing plaques on the innermost layer of the wall of an artery.

Byline: ANI Washington, May 6 (ANI): Scientists at Columbia University Medical Center say that they have gained significant insights into why certain arterial plaques in any given individual eventually lead to an acute blood clot, a heart attack, a stroke, or even sudden death.
There are studies that show that HDL can act as a virtual Roto-Rooster for clogging blood vessels, pushing out bad cholesterol and causing a slowdown in the build-up of arterial plaque, the substance that leads to the hardening of the arteries.
