arecoline an alkaloid obtained from the nut of the tree Areca catechu. Previously, a preferred treatment for cestodes in dogs. The acetarsol, hydrobromide and carboxyphenylstilbonate salts have been used for this purpose. Oral administration causes paralysis of the worms and catharsis, so the worms are expelled alive and intact. Lower doses are used as a laxative. arecoline challenge test used in the diagnosis of narcolepsy in dogs; pretreatment with atropine reduces the number of cataleptic attacks with exposure to food.
