The Australasian Sketcher hailed the building as a 'Collins Street Improvement' (that is, an improvement on the ugly vacant block that was there before) and 'a step in advance of the general street architecture of the city, with its use of iron for the arcading and tiles for the decoration of the facade.
Some of the tower's best surviving medieval architecture - such as decorative arcading along the walls - can be found inside.
The dim interior gives way outside to the happy cloister, complete with Gothic arcading, ponds with crotchety old geese (some of which may be as old as the church) lazing in the shade of magnolias and palms, and a fountain with a statue of the city's patron St.
