apoplexy /ap·o·plexy/ (ap´o-plek″se) old term for stroke syndrome. adrenal apoplexy sudden massive hemorrhage into the adrenal gland, occurring in Waterhouse-Friderichsen syndrome.
apoplexy (aˑ·p n reduced circulation in the brain. It occurs when a blood vessel bursts spontaneously or is blocked or by physical injury to the head, arteriosclerosis (hardening of the arteries), atherosclerosis (excess cholesterol in the blood), and high blood pressure. Also called stroke, cerebral embolism, cerebral hemorrhage, cerebral infarction, and cerebral thrombosis. apoplexy (ap´ōplek´sē), n a sudden loss or decrease of neurologic function often caused by cerebrovascular accident (CVA). apoplexy Neurology An imprecise term for an acute devastating intracerebral event–eg stroke, intracranial hemorrhage, often associated with loss of consciousness and paralysis.
