antiinitiator [-inish′ē·ātər] a substance that is a potential cocarcinogen but that may protect cells against cancer development if given before exposure to an initiator. An example is the food additive butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT). An antiinitiator given after exposure to an initiator may also act as a promoter and encourage rather than block cancer development.
