In terms of antibody absorption, the red cells in the sample have been bathed in patient plasma while in vivo, and, in general, additional in vitro time spent in association with red cells will not materially affect the concentration of antibodies in the serum.
Lumbar puncture was performed and cerebrospinal fluid analysis revealed that his glucose level (62 mg/dl), protein level (35 mg/dl), and cell count were normal and that his fluorescent treponemal antibody absorption (FTA-ABS) and Venereal Disease Research Laboratory (VDRL) assays were nonreactive.
More sensitive nontreponemal tests such as the rapid plasma reagin (RPR) and the Venereal Disease Research Laboratory (VDRL) are used for initial screening, while specific treponemal tests such as the fluorescent treponemal antibody absorption (FTA-ABS) are used to confirm the diagnosis.
