Anabaena a genus of planktonic Cyanobacteria which frequents still, fresh water. Important because of its capacity to produce potent toxins including anatoxin, saxitoxin and microcystin. Causes nervous syndrome, highly fatal within a few hours, and hepatic necrosis with photosensitization. Called also water bloom. Includes A. circinalis, A. flos-aquae, A. spiroides. Cylindrospermotbsis, Lyngbya, Microcystis, Nodularia, and Planktothrix
