ampicillin /am·pi·cil·lin/ (am?pi-sil´in) a semisynthetic, acid-resistant, penicillinase-sensitive penicillin used as an antibacterial against many gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria; also used as the sodium salt.

A semisynthetic penicillin having a broader antibacterial spectrum of action than that of penicillin G. It is effective against gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria and used to treat gonorrhea and infections of the intestinal, urinary, and respiratory tracts.

ampicillin
an aminopenicillin of synthetic origin, susceptible to ß-lactamase, with activity similar to amoxicillin but shorter duration of activity. It can be administered orally or parenterally.
