algolagnia

[al′gōlag′nē·ə]
Etymology: Gk, algos, pain, lagneia, lust
a form of sexual perversion characterized by sadism or masochism. See also sadomasochism.

algolagnia

(1) Sexuoeroticism that is contingent on receiving physical pain, in particular in an erogenous zone. Algolagnia is currently attributed to the misinterpretation of the brain of painful stimuli as pleasurable, which is linked in some cases to a mutation in SCN9A, which encodes a sodium ion channel.
(2) Sado-masochistic sexual drive, which is divided into:
• Active algolagnia, preferably termed sexual sadism, or sadism; and
• Passive algolagnia, preferably termed sexual masochism, or masochism.

al·go·lag·ni·a

(al'gō-lag'nē-ă)
Form of sexual perversion in which the infliction or the experiencing of pain increases the pleasure of the sexual act or causes sexual pleasure independent of the act; includes both sadism (active algolagnia) and masochism (passive algolagnia).
Synonym(s): algophilia (2) .
