alfentanil /al·fen·ta·nil/ (al-fen´tah-nil) an opioid analgesic of rapid onset and short duration derived from fentanyl, used as the hydrochloride salt in the induction of general anesthesia and as an adjunct in general, regional, and local anesthesia.

an opioid analgesic of rapid onset and short duration derived from fentanyl; the hydrochloride salt is used as a primary agent for induction of general anesthesia, as an adjunct in maintenance of general anesthesia, and as an adjunct to regional or local anesthesia.
