Etymology: Ar, alkohl, essence; Gk, ataxia, disorder
a loss of coordination in performing voluntary movements associated with peripheral neuritis as a result of alcoholism. A similar form of ataxia may occur with neuritis resulting from other toxic agents. See also Wernicke's encephalopathy.
In chronic alcoholism, ataxia due to a loss of proprioception.
