alcohol bath,
a procedure for decreasing an elevated body temperature. It is not widely used because of the drying effect of alcohol. A tepid solution of 25% to 50% alcohol in water is sponged lightly on each limb, then on the trunk; the person is turned only once from the supine to the prone position if possible and then back again. Some sources recommend placing a hot-water bottle at the feet and a cold compress on the head to accelerate heat loss through vasodilation, to promote the comfort of the patient during the procedure, and to reduce the temperature of the circulation to the brain.
