agnis (g·nēsˑ),
n.pl in Ayurveda, the elements that aid digestion. There are 13 types of agnis: five bhutagnis, which metabolize the five mahabhutas; seven dhatu agnis, which aid in tissue metabolism; and jatharagni, responsible for primary metabolism of food. See also mahabhutas and dhatus.
