afterloading

afterloading,
a technique in which an unloaded applicator or needle is placed within a patient at the time of an operative procedure and subsequently loaded with a radioactive source. The loading is done under controlled conditions in which health care personnel are protected against radiation exposure. See also remote afterloading.
