afterfeather

a small feather underneath the large main feather produced by most plumaceous and pennaceous feather follicles. It varies from a simple tuft to a structure identical to the main feather. It is missing in some birds including the ostrich and some passerines.

Cut off most of afterfeather, leaving a usable feather about 2 1/2" long.
Dip end of toothpick in glue and carefully transfer glue to the shaft and a tiny bit to vane of the feather, being careful not to get the glue on the small amount of afterfeather (fluky part) that remains.
