adrenocorticotrophic hormone (ACTH)

a hormone secreted into the bloodstream by the anterior pituitary; acts on the adrenal cortex, promoting the secretion of corticosteroids. ACTH secretion is itself regulated by the ACTH-releasing hormone from the hypothalamus. This in turn is susceptible to many influences within central nervous system, taking part in responses to many types of injury or stress.
