a connective tissue that contains multilocular fat cells whose color results from cytochrome pigments and a high density of mitochondria; it functions primarily in heat production and control of body weight. Is especially notable in young and hibernating animals for non-shivering thermogenesis.
white adipose tissue
a connective tissue that contains large spherical or polyhedral fat cells each storing a single fat droplet; it is the form in which a majority of the body's available energy is stored as triacylglycerols.
