The authors said that prospective studies could evaluate whether the success of adenotonsillectomy for treatment of OSA in obese children can be predicted from models incorporating both estimates of adenotonsillar size and Mallampati scores.
Between 2000 and 2003, researchers at the University Medical Center Utrecht compared 151 children, aged 2--8, who were assigned to have adenotonsillectomy within 6 weeks and 149 children assigned to watchful waiting, which involved close monitoring and interventions as necessary.
Both the adenotonsillectomy group and the methylphenidate group had far better posttreatment scores on neuropsychological assessments of ADHD than did the no-treatment group or the control group.
