actinomyosin,
the complex consisting of parallel threads of actin and myosin proteins that constitutes muscle fibers. It is responsible for the contraction and relaxation of muscle. When a muscle fiber contracts, the two proteins slide past each other, shortening the fiber while increasing its apparent thickness. Also called actomyosin. See also sliding filaments.
