adj.
Of or relating to bacteria that are not decolorized by an acidic alcohol solution after they have been stained.
acid-fastness n.
acid-fast
1. not readily decolorized by acids after staining; said of bacteria, especially Mycobacterium spp.
2. stain demonstrating this characteristic. See also Ziehl-Neelsen stain.
modified acid-fast bacteria
resist decolorization by mild acid solutions; includes Brucella and Nocardia.
