abortus fever,
a form of brucellosis, a systemic bacterial disease, the only one endemic to North America. It is caused by Brucella abortus, an organism so named because it causes abortion in cows. Infection in humans results from contact (through breaks in skin) with the tissues, blood, urine, vaginal discharges, aborted fetuses, and especially placentas of infected animals (cows, sheep, and goats) and by ingestion of raw milk and dairy products (unpasteurized cheese) from infected animals. Also called Rio Grande fever. See also brucellosis. Want to thank TFD for its existence?
