There are 3 characteristic abnormal vascular patterns found on colposcopy, assessment of which forms part of the colposcopic index, a scoring instrument used to determine the likelihood that the uterine cervix being examined will have a pathologically significant lesion at biopsy.

Abnormal Vascular Pattern scores
0—Fine-calibre vessels with poorly formed patterns.
1—Absent vessels.
2—Punctate or mosaic pattern.

Large biopsy is reserved for lesions showing colposcopic evidence of microinvasion, such as abnormal vascular patterns marked by corkscrewing, marked dilation, or increased intercapillary distance.
