vomiting, dehydration, hypotension, and sudden death due to very large sodium losses from the body (see
salt wasting). It may be seen in abnormal losses of
sodium into the urine (as in congenital adrenal hyperplasia, adrenocortical insufficiency, or one of the forms of
salt-losing nephritis) or in large extrarenal sodium losses, usually from the gastrointestinal tract.
