epidemic pleurodynia an epidemic disease usually caused by group B coxsackieviruses and sometimes by group A coxsackieviruses, echoviruses, and other enteroviruses, marked by a sudden attack of violent pain in the chest, fever, and a tendency to recurrence on the third day. Called also

2. Paroxysmal pain and soreness of the muscles between the ribs.
3. An epidemic disease caused by a coxsackievirus, characterized by paroxysmal pain in the lower chest and accompanied by fever, headache, and malaise.
