Circulating antibody to the hepatitis C virus used to diagnose HCV exposure. An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay is used to detect HCV antibody with a recombinant immunoblot assay used as a confirmatory test. Detectable HCV antibody is associated with active viral replication in 70% of patients by PCR.
