genetic mapping

1. The process of determining the location of the genes for various characteristics and diseases in the chromosomes.
2. The determination of the sequence of bases in the chromosomes corresponding to the genes. The human GENOME mapping project is now under way and is hoped to be completed by the beginning of the 21st Century.
