cholesterol emboli syndrome

A condition resulting from the freeing of cholesterol crystals into the bloodstream from plaques of ATHEROMA in ATHEROSCLEROSIS and the movement of this material with the blood to obstruct small arteries in various parts of the body. Cholesterol emboli can cause TRANSIENT ISCHAEMIC ATTACKS, and damage to the brain, kidneys, spleen, eyes, heart, intestine and skin. Emboli are often released during or after ANGIOGRAPHY.
