A nonspecific term, variably defined depending on:
(1) Different cancers’ range in aggressiveness, from those for which “watchful waiting” is appropriate (e.g., mycosis fungoides, CLL) to those requiring heroic surgery (e.g., Whipple procedure or marrow-ablating chemotherapy); and
(2) Type of treatment, which may include surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, recombinant DNA drugs, etc.

The phrase is commonly used by doctors to simplify explanations to patients who are less knowledgeable of cancer varietals.
