bread mould

the fungus Mucor or a related form (e.g. Rhizopus) which grows on bread. The term can also denote Neurospora crassa (the red bread mould), a member of the ASCOMYCOTA, which is associated with decomposing or burned vegetation. This organism was used by BEADLE and Tatum in their work on which the ONE GENE/ONE ENZYME HYPOTHESIS is based.
