brainstem auditory evoked response

au·di·to·ry brain·stem re·sponse (ABR),

an electrophysiologic measure of auditory function using computer-averaged responses produced by the auditory nerve and the central auditory pathways principally in the brainstem to repetitive acoustic stimuli. ABR is also used to locate brainstem lesions and determine whether a hearing impairment is sensory or neural.

brainstem auditory evoked response

A method for evaluating hearing using clicking sounds and recording the responses (known as auditory evoked potentials) with EEG electrodes placed on the scalp; BAER is an objective means of diagnosing and localising early lesions of the auditory system.
 
Indications
BAER is used to diagnose acoustic neuroma, instrinsic brainstem lesions (e.g., multiple sclerosis, infarction, gliomas), degenerative disease (e.g., Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, Meniere’s disease, olivopontocerebellar degeneration, stroke, Wilson’s disease), increased intracranial pressure and brain death.
