beam dump

A device which absorbs electromagnetic radiation, either photons or ionising radiation in the form of electrons, protons, nuclei or ions. Beam dumps take into account backscatter of radiation and overheating with appropriate metallic shielding—e.g., lead, copper, aluminium, carbon, beryllium and tungsten.
