Production of gastric H+ under baseline conditions, normal: 0-10 mmol/hour. The BAO serves to evaluate the completeness of vagotomy; patients with Zollinger-Ellison syndrome have a ratio of basal to maximal acid output (BAO:MAO) of > 60%.
