antimicrobial agent

an agent such as an ANTIBIOTIC, a DISINFECTANT or an ANTISEPTIC, that kills MICROORGANISMS or inhibits their growth. An agent that specifically affects BACTERIA is an antibacterial agent, one specifically affecting FUNGI is an antifungal agent. Such agents may be used in the treatment or prevention of DISEASES caused by microorganisms, and also in the preservation of various materials.
