Drugs that reduce the levels of cholesterol and fats (triglycerides) in the blood. They include statin drugs (see STATINS) such as SIMVASTATIN, ATORVASTATIN, PROVASTATIN, ROSUVASTATIN AND FLUVASTATIN that block the synthesis of cholesterol; bile acid sequestrants such as CHOLESTYRAMINE (colestyramine) and COLESTIPOL that bind and remove from the intestine bile acids which are derived from cholesterol; fibrates such as CIPROFIBRATE, BENZAFIBRATE AND GEMFIBROZIL that interfere with cholesterol synthesis; and nicotinic acid derivatives that interfere with the release of fats from body fat stores and increase the activity of fat-splitting enzymes.
