An amphoteric polyene antibiotic prepared from Streptomyces nodosus and available as the sodium deoxycholate complex; also a nephrotoxic antifungal agent used extensively in the treatment of systemic mycoses.

amphotericin

An antibiotic produced from Streptomyces nodosus used to treat systemic fungal infections. The drug is liable to cause kidney damage. Brand names are Ambisome, Amphocil and Fungizone. Amphotericin B is marketed under the brand name Abelcet.
