ad hoc hypothesis

An hypothesis added to accepted scientific dogma to account for unexplained anomalies in the paradigm and are more common in pseudoscientific doctrines—e.g., behavioural genetics or aromatherapy. An increase in ad hoc hypotheses may presage a paradigm shift and new explanations which encompass what were anomalies under the prior paradigm.
