NANOS3

NANOS3

A gene on chromosome 19p13.13 that encodes a nanos-family zinc finger protein which plays a role in maintaining the undifferentiated state of germ cells by regulating the spermatogonia cell cycle and inducing a prolonged G1 phase. NANOS3 maintains the germ cell lineage by suppressing Bax-dependent and Bax-independent apoptosis. It is essential in early embryos to protect migrating primordial germ cells from apoptosis.
