DIO3

DIO3

An intronless gene on chromosome 14q32 that encodes an iodothyronine deiodinase, which inactivates thyroid hormone by inner ring deiodination of the prohormone thyroxine (T4) to its inactive metabolite, 3,3’,5’-triiodothyronine (RT3), and that of the bioactive hormon 3,3’,5-triiodothyronine (T3) to 3,3’-diiodothyronine (T2). DIO3 is highly expressed in the pregnant uterus, placenta, and foetal and neonatal tissues, suggesting a central role in regulating thyroid hormone inactivation during early development.
