a bacterial species found in a broad range of animal species, causing atrophic rhinitis of swine, bronchopneumonia in rodents, respiratory disease in cats, and a highly contagious bronchopneumonia in dogs. It is a rare cause of opportunistic respiratory tract infection in immunocompromised human patients.

Bordetella bronchiseptica

A small, aerobic, gram-negative bacillus which is part of normal respiratory flora of domestic mammals—e.g., dogs, cats—but not humans.
 
Clinical findings
Bordetella bronchiseptica is an uncommon opportunistic infection in immune compromised hosts, causing pneumonia, bacteremia, UTIs, meningitis and endocarditis.
 
Mode of transmission
Contaminated aerosols from pets.
