BIONJ
Bisphosphonate-induced osteonecrosis of the jaw. A condition linked to the use of IV and oral nitrogen-containing bisphosphonate drugs, resulting in osteonecrosis of the jaw.
Drugs implicated
Zoledronate, pamidronate or combination thereof, used to treat breast cancer or myeloma. About 5% of those with BIONJ were being treated for osteoporosis.
Risk factors
Tooth extractions (50% of cases), mandibular exostoses, periodontal disease, trauma from ill-fitting dentures, smoking, obesity, use of cytotoxic drugs and glucocorticoids.Segen's Medical Dictionary. © 2012 Farlex, Inc. All rights reserved.
