An NHS term for a patient from outside the hospital or an inpatient from another specialty who attends a ward on an individual basis, by appointment or casually, and is seen by a junior doctor. Ward attenders are distinguished from outpatients, given their attendance outside of clinic sessions and by interaction with junior doctors rather than by a consultant or a senior member of his or her team.

ward attender (nurse only)

A patient from outside the hospital or from another specialty, who attends a ward on an individual basis, either by appointment or casually, and is seen only by a member of the nursing staff.
