When feeding on its host plant, both nymphs and adults can acquire viruses if the plant is already infected, then becoming
viruliferous. Even though nymphs can carry viruses inside their bodies, they are unable to disseminate them within important distances, so virus dispersal depends entirely on the adults, which are the mobile stage and also the responsible for selection and colonization of the host plant (Byrne & Bellows, 1991).

Our efforts to compare the efficacy of atplant treatments when plants were exposed to
viruliferous whiteflies at planting versus 2 weeks after planting by protecting plots with row covers met with limited success because virus pressure was very low in the spring trial and the row cover treatment failed in the fall 2013.
For greenhouse evaluation of MSV resistance, 10 seeds were planted and seedlings were thinned to 8 per pot just before infestation with
viruliferous leafhoppers.

A bulk of Pop 63 SR was planted at IITA, Ibadan (7[degrees]38' N, 3[degrees]93' E), Nigeria and [S.sub.0] plants were infested with
viruliferous leaf hoppers (Cicadulina spp.) about 9 d after planting.
