an enzyme that covalently links a tyrosine to the C-terminal glutamyl residue of tubulin, coupled with the hydrolysis of ATP to ADP and orthophosphate; this is a unique posttranslational modification that may have a significant role in cytoskeletal traffic, design, and stability.
