[klor´al] 1. an oily liquid with a pungent, irritating odor; used in the manufacture of
chloral hydrate and
DDT.
chloral hydrate a
sedative and
hypnotic used primarily as an adjunct to
anesthesia and for sedation of children before certain medical or dental procedures. It is now rarely used for management of
insomnia. The Health Care Financing Administration (HCFA) guidelines for long-term care facilities discourages the use of chloral hydrate. The National Institutes of Health Consensus Conference on the Treatment of Sleep Disorders of Older People noted that hypnotic medications such as this should not be the mainstay of management of most causes of disturbed sleep.
