supply estimate

supply estimate

A UK term loosely equivalent to main estimates, which projects the funds required in the coming financial year and is a request by the Executive to Parliament for money.

Supply Estimates (SEs) are sub-divided into groups (Classes) which contain provisions (usually by a single department) covering services of a broadly similar nature; a sub-division of a Class is known as a 'Vote' and covers a narrower range of services. The Department of Health (DH) has three Votes which form Class II. Vote 1 covers the DH and contains two Requests for Resources (RfRs)—the first covering expenditure on the NHS, the second other DH services and programmes. An SE does not of itself authorise expenditure of the sums requested; this comes through an Appropriation Act passed by Parliament.
