STICH

Acronym for Surgical Trial in Intracerebral Haemorrhage, an international randomised trial designed to compare the results of early surgery and conservative treatment in cases of spontaneous supratentorial haematomas. A trial report in 2005 suggested that early surgery offered no benefit, but technical advances in surgery are thought likely to challenge this view.

One limitation of the STICH analysis, said session cochair Stephan Achenbach, MD, is that the study population was relatively young overall.
