A popular term for research in which materials are prepared in small or more poorly equipped labs, and shuttled to well-equiped labs that perform the more costly parts of the experiment (e.g., magnetic resonance spectroscopy or X-ray crystallography).

Space medicine
Any research carried out with the aid of NASA’s space shuttles—most of which were related to microgravity (e.g., growth of protein crystals and virulence of bacteria).
