There is an absence of the cochlea, vestibule,
semicircular canals, and vestibular and cochlear aqueducts.
With the intention of seeking to determine the role of the vestibular dysfunction and postural balance in children, which showed failures on the implanted device, the vestibular function in 35 children with failure in the CI was compared with 165 children, who have not experienced the failure, through the evaluation of the function of the horizontal
semicircular canal. The authors concluded that the vestibular dysfunction and its commitment were identified as important risk factors for the failure of the CI in children.
Restoration of the VOR high-frequency response as described here probably requires at least some partially remaining function of the
semicircular canals. Restoration would not take place after complete vestibular ablation where long-term pathologic HIT findings are the rule.
Efficacy of ocular vestibular-evoked myogenic potential in identifying posterior
semicircular canal benign paroxysmal positional vertigo.
The pre-operative CT scans were reported to assess characteristic cholesteatoma findings, location and extension of soft tissues in middle ear, integrity of scutum, erosion of the ossicular chain, integrity of the thin bony septum of facial nerve canal, the
semicircular canals and the tegmenextension of cholesteatoma outside the middle ear, integrity of mastoid air cells, trabeculae, as well as relationship and proximity of soft tissues with the tympanic membrane were assessed.
He pioneered treatments for Superior
Semicircular Canal Dehiscence and other vestibular disorders.
BPPV is often accompained with nausea, vomiting, (27) and is usually caused by dislodged otoconia in the posterior
semicircular canal. Episodic vertigo continues for many weeks and then resolves spontaneously, but, in some cases, it is recurrent.
Anatomic4 work and surgeons' observations5 have suggested that it is caused by displacement of otoconial matter into the lumen or onto the cupula of the posterior
semicircular canal (i.e., canalithiasis and cupulolithiasis, respectively).
Involvement of the anterior
semicircular canal in posttraumatic benign paroxysmal positioning vertigo.

Semicircular canal malformations: They are absent, hypoplastic, or enlarged.
Of interest, the scan also showed dehiscence of the superior
semicircular canal with moth-eaten appearance of the adjacent tegmen.
Erosion of the lateral
semicircular canal was seen in 22.9% cases (sensitivity of 85.7% and specificity of 96.1%), erosion of the superior
semicircular canal was seen in 5.7% cases (sensitivity specificity of 100%) and posterior
semicircular canal erosion was seen in 5.7% cases (sensitivity of 50% and specificity of 100%) (Figure 5).
