marsh mallow

Herbal medicine
A perennial herb that contains asparagin, mucilage and tannins; it is a mild diuretic and expectorant. Marsh mallow is used internally for inflammation and upper GI ulcers, to soothe the respiratory and urinary tracts, and for UTIs and kidney stones; it is used topically for abscesses, burns, cuts, ulcers, varicose veins, oral infections and inflammation.

The study site was a freshwater marsh at Stage's Pond State Nature Preserve in Pickaway County, Ohio, populated by a few thousand rose mallow individuals bordering a water-filled closed depression, Stages's Pond (N39[degrees]40'30.2"N82[degrees]56'12.8").
Some nurseries also carry rose mallow in 1-gallon ($4 to $5) and 5-gallon ($15 to $18) containers.
The greenhouse is packed with caterpillar delicacies: milkweed, hollyhock and rose mallow. The caterpillars munch away at the foliage until the leaves look like delicate lace.
In the fall, gray feather, rose mallow and Maximillian sunflowers provide color.
