regulon

a system where more than one structural GENE/OPERON, each with its own PROMOTER, is under control of the same regulator molecule, for example, an activator protein or repressor protein. The genes/operons collectively forming a regulon are often non-contiguous on the genome and share common regulatory sequences, such as activator binding sites (initiators) or operators (see OPERON MODEL), each of which is recognized by the same regulator molecule. A regulon may be positively controlled by an activator protein, as in the maltose regulon of ESCHERICHIA COLI, or negatively controlled by a repressor protein, as in the arginine regulon of E.coli.

Upon reaching a sufficient cell density on the intestinal mucosa, the Agr-like quorum-sensing system is triggered, which in turn up-regulates the VirR/VirS regulon. This regulon includes NetB.
In response to an SOS-inducing treatment or condition, a signal (involving regions of single-stranded DNA) is generated that stimulates expression of the SOS regulon. RecA protein binding to single-stranded DNA regions in the presence of a nucleoside triphosphate forms a nucleoprotein filament and converts RecA protein to an activated form (12).
